Astaire was in the same room where Iâd left him, sitting in the chair by the fire, when Nora and I tracked him down for further questioning.
He hardly seemed to notice us as we sat near him. His glassy gaze remained on the crackling fire.
I wasnât sure what else Nora wanted to know that I hadnât already covered, so I listened closely.
âTedâs just left with Haven,â Nora said. âOnce the checks are complete, youâll be able to have a proper funeral for her.â
He said nothing.
âAstaire, I know you and Haven are from Avalon, but is there anyone staying here who she mightâve known previous to arriving?â
The question was provocative enough to pull his attention from the fire, and he stared at Nora, blinking. âI certainly donât know anyone here. Perhaps she knew someone, but I canât imagine who. Sheâs never been to Eastwind before. Not to my knowledge, at least.â
âDid she have any particular interactions with the other guests during your time here that mightâve caused tension?â
âNo. She was ornery since we arrived, but only to me. She was her usual jovial self to everyone else. She wantsâwanted attention above all else, and she would be whoever she needed to be to get it. She preferred positive attention, but sheâd take negative attention if that was all she could get.â
âAnd was that all she could get with the other guests?â
âNo, no.â He waved away the idea. âShe could get plenty of positive attention from them. She always wanted more attention than I could give, than any single person could give.â
âAnd did it make you jealous?â Nora asked.
âNo, and thatâs the truth of it. I know youâre trying to find a reason why I mightâve killed her, and in some ways, I wish I could give it to you so we could be done with this. But I didnât murder my wife, and I wasnât jealous when other men and women noticed her and gave her attention. She was a beautiful woman, no debating that. When I saw others eyeing her in that way, all I felt was relief. As long as they were giving her attention, she wouldnât be demanding it from me, and I could focus on other things without her badgering me.â He moaned. âOh, thatâs so terrible of me to say. So, so terrible. I loved her, I really did. How could I speak like that of her?â He pressed his fingertips to his forehead. âIâve got to get out of here. I canât stand being in this inn for another second!â
Nora nodded. âI need you to stay in Eastwind for now, but I can arrange a place for you to stay. Thereâs a lodge not far from here owned by the head of the werebear clan.â
âWerebears? You expect me to stay with werebears? Did I come to Eastwind or Wisconsin?â
It was so strange to hear a familiar location mentioned, that I snapped my attention to Nora, who shook her head minutely and whispered, âNot that one. Thereâs a realm.
