Astaire was in the same room where I’d left him, sitting in the chair by the fire, when Nora and I tracked him down for further questioning.

He hardly seemed to notice us as we sat near him. His glassy gaze remained on the crackling fire.

I wasn’t sure what else Nora wanted to know that I hadn’t already covered, so I listened closely.

“Ted’s just left with Haven,” Nora said. “Once the checks are complete, you’ll be able to have a proper funeral for her.”

He said nothing.

“Astaire, I know you and Haven are from Avalon, but is there anyone staying here who she might’ve known previous to arriving?”

The question was provocative enough to pull his attention from the fire, and he stared at Nora, blinking. “I certainly don’t know anyone here. Perhaps she knew someone, but I can’t imagine who. She’s never been to Eastwind before. Not to my knowledge, at least.”

“Did she have any particular interactions with the other guests during your time here that might’ve caused tension?”

“No. She was ornery since we arrived, but only to me. She was her usual jovial self to everyone else. She wants—wanted attention above all else, and she would be whoever she needed to be to get it. She preferred positive attention, but she’d take negative attention if that was all she could get.”

“And was that all she could get with the other guests?”

“No, no.” He waved away the idea. “She could get plenty of positive attention from them. She always wanted more attention than I could give, than any single person could give.”

“And did it make you jealous?” Nora asked.

“No, and that’s the truth of it. I know you’re trying to find a reason why I might’ve killed her, and in some ways, I wish I could give it to you so we could be done with this. But I didn’t murder my wife, and I wasn’t jealous when other men and women noticed her and gave her attention. She was a beautiful woman, no debating that. When I saw others eyeing her in that way, all I felt was relief. As long as they were giving her attention, she wouldn’t be demanding it from me, and I could focus on other things without her badgering me.” He moaned. “Oh, that’s so terrible of me to say. So, so terrible. I loved her, I really did. How could I speak like that of her?” He pressed his fingertips to his forehead. “I’ve got to get out of here. I can’t stand being in this inn for another second!”

Nora nodded. “I need you to stay in Eastwind for now, but I can arrange a place for you to stay. There’s a lodge not far from here owned by the head of the werebear clan.”

“Werebears? You expect me to stay with werebears? Did I come to Eastwind or Wisconsin?”

It was so strange to hear a familiar location mentioned, that I snapped my attention to Nora, who shook her head minutely and whispered, “Not that one. There’s a realm.
